What do I expect from a career as a personal protection specialist?

T

he glamorous world of personal protection attracts thousands of young people every year. You see an idealized image of the superhero, James Bond, Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood, Ryan Reynolds or Nicolas Cage in Hollywood blockbusters, in BBC series or in musicals. Unfortunately, the world of personal protection, close protection, executive protection, bodyguarding or security escort is neither glamorous nor can it be compared to the world in movies.

It is important to think carefully about what you want and, above all, what you don't want in the run-up to your career.

Do You want to go on a big world tour with a superstar, then you're away from friends, family and partners for a year or maybe longer. Would You like to live with a High Net Worth family, take the children to school and mostly give up your own life, or do You want to accompany some warlords with children armies in crisis areas? Do You want celebrity, business or athletes; individuals or families; in Germany or abroad; high risk or "just" easy in Buxtehude? Questions after questions.

Once you know what you want, the search for the right training, for mentors, for clients, for financial means and employers begins.

You probably won't get very far alone in the shark tank of personal security.

You should set yourself achievable goals here, accept even the smallest assignment and learn to question yourself again and again, is that what I wanted and can I make a living with it. Every job allows you to progress and learn new things. Deployments at events or at doors are just as instructive as accompanying the client on a trip or at business meetings. Assignments to transport or transfers, at concerts, at sporting events, at home or in a hotel, at conferences, while shopping or other free time activities of the VIP may not be as "sexy" as an assignment to the Oscars, the Superbowl or a celebrity party, but these "unsexy" tasks get You exactly on the right track. You learn to read people, broaden your horizons and network, make decisions, observe others and be right in the middle of the game. Work your way up, compare it to a newly formed sports team. You start in the lowest league and then work your way up step by step, all the way to the Champions League or the Super Bowl. You will feel the success slowly but surely, You will become more confident and better. You will learn exactly what you need for your clients and what You can use again for the next assignments. Keep educating yourself. Who rests, rusts, is an old German saying.

LIFELONG LEARNING.
